Magnesium is essential for brain and nerve function. It is also vital for hair and horn growth. Many pastures are deficient in magnesium so supplementation is often necessary. Magnesium oxide provides a readily absorbable source of magnesium that can also help neutralise excess stomach acid.
Magnesium supplementation is often used to help calm horses who suffer from anxiety and nervousness. It is also thought to be helpful for horses with poor quality hoof growth and is often recommended for horses exhibiting low-grade foot pain due to poor metabolic function.
Magnesium Oxide is about 50% absorbable, depending on the relative levels of Calcium also present. The advantage of magnesium oxide is that the body will not absorb it if there is no deficiency, so it is difficult to overdose a horse using this source.
Dose Rate:
The normal blood level for Magnesium in horses is 2.2-2.7mg/dl, according to National Research Council in 2007 (NRC), serum magnesium values below 1.6mg/dl are defined as hypomagnesaemia. According to NRC, an intake of 20mg of Magnesium per kilogram of bodyweight per day is necessary to maintain normal blood serum levels. Thus, for a 500kg horse in light to moderate exercise, an intake of 10g per day is necessary to maintain blood levels.

Why Salt Blocks?
Animals have sought salt since the beginning of time, gathering at salt licks to satisfy their need for salt. Many New Zealand soils and pastures are naturally low in available sodium, and the use of certain fertilisers, such as Potash, may accelerate the leaching process.
Sodium deficiencies are manifested as abnormal licking or chewing of wood, soil and sweat of other animals and may be accompanied by a decline in growth rates and/or milk production.
Common Salt (sodium chloride) is an essential constituent of animal diet. Because many New Zealand pastures are deficient in sodium some form of supplementation is often necessary. For instance, lactating cows need a daily minimum of 20gms of sodium chloride, dry cattle a minimum of 10gms and sheep a minimum of 2gms.
Sodium is routinely expelled from the body in milk, urine, faeces, sweat and saliva. Sodium should be available to farm animals every day and because of this, is a convenient carrier of other minerals.
Salt may be one of the most cost effective methods of increasing production.
Sodium in some form should be available at all times all year round
Dairy cows’ salt requirements significantly increase when lactating, as large amounts of sodium are excreted in milk
Young animals in rapid growth need sodium for new tissue formation
When sodium is deficient, appetite is suppressed
Trials prove Summit® Salt Blocks last nearly 4 times longer than loose rock salt and require twice as much rainfall before broken down by the elements.
Compact 20kg Summit® Salt Blocks are easy to stack, handle and dispense.
Elements:
New Zealand dairy cows grazing pasture are most susceptible to deficiencies of cobalt, copper, iodine, and selenium.
Zinc supplementation is also important for immunity and hoof health.
Trace mineral deficiencies may induce problems such as abortions, retained placentas, mastitis, and infertility.

Apple Cider Vinegar
The Benefits of Feeding Your Horse Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
1. Improve digestion and balance PH levels in your horse
Apple Cider Vinegar works to acidify the horse’s stomach for better digestion, cleansing the digestic tract. It can also aid in the absorption of minerals and helps balance the acid/alkaline ratio which is essential for good health. ACV can work as a natural anti-biotic, and can discourage parasites and water-borne diseases. Apple Cider Vinegar also contains anti-oxidants, which are vital to protect the horse’s body from free radicals which can cause a lot of damage.
2. Ease Arthritis symptoms & help with joint movement and muscle function
Both horses and humans have benefited from ACV to help control the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. It can help break down acid crystals, which can build up in joints and cause your horse tissue stiffness and soreness.
3. Natural Insect Control
By feeding your horse or pony ACV daily in their feed, it causes higher levels of thiamine (vitamin B) to be excreted through their skin, which discourages biting insects such as flies and mosquitos.
You can also make your own fly repellant by mixing together 2 cups ACV, 1 cup water, 1 cup bath oil and 2 teaspoons of citronella. Simply mix well and spray over the horse’s coat for a natural fly repellent!
4. Mane and Tail Conditioner
Condition your horse’s mane and tail naturally by adding 1 cup of ACV to a bucket of water for the final rinse after washing your horse’s tail. Use a spray bottle for the mane with the same quantities of water and ACV. This will leave your horse’s mane and tail incredibly soft and smooth and will remove any soap residue.
