For acute problems remove the horse from ALL green, grass until he is back to normal, then gradually and carefully reintroduce grass again.

It is necessary to lower potassium intake by immediately removing from the horse’s diet:

·         short, green, growing grass

·         legumes like clover and lucerne

·         soy-based feeds and protein meals

·         molassed feeds

All of the above add to your horse’s potassium load and make it harder for his system to keep vital minerals in balance.

He will still be ingesting plenty of potassium (more than his daily requirement) from his 24/7 hay

Additional calcium is required for:

• Pregnant mares to build the skeleton (and other tissues) of the unborn foal
• Lactating mares especially until the foal is about 3 months old. Young foals take virtually all their nutrition from their mother's milk. For instance if Mum doesn't receive enough calcium from her diet then it is dragged out of her bones to supply the needs of the growing foal. This is detrimental to her long term health and means the foal may not get all he requires to be strong and healthy
• Horses that are working hard suffer a lot of 'wear and tear' and can lose calcium in their sweat
• Oxalates present in certain grasses, (especially kikuyu in New Zealand) bind up the calcium making it unavailable to the horse. The organic calcium in Xtra Cal is already bound so cannot be bound by oxalates and is therefore available to the horse.

* Pregnant and lactating mares that are also grazing oxalate grasses are very vulnerable to calcium deficiency.

Alleviate C contains the same dose of organic magnesium and boron as Alleviate with the addition of organic calcium.

Calcium and magnesium are 2 of the 5 major electrolytes present in blood and body fluids. Blood levels of these vital minerals need to be kept at certain levels for life to continue.

When the diet fails to supply adequate levels, the blood is forced to borrow them from other tissues. Calcium is released from the skeleton and magnesium is borrowed from muscle tissue including the heart.

Too many horses are finished their useful life before they are 20.

Demineralisation is not something that you can see happening from the outside and once it becomes obvious by the appearance of degenerative diseases, it is too late.
