Why is the bark of Willow used?

The most potent part of the willow tree is the bark. 

This contains the highest levels of salicin, a substance which is also found in the leaves, but the bark is the most potent source.

Salicin is what provides inflammation and pain relief.

This remarkable finding from nature was also the basis of “Aspirin” in modern day medicine.

Why willow should be a fine powder:

Willow should be ground fine and not resemble chunky or gritty pieces.

The fineness of the powder ensures the largest surface for absorption by the body.

When finely ground it should be kept fresh in an airtight pack.

Once opened it is then ready to administer into feed.

What dose of Willow should i give my horse ?

A daily suggested dose for a 500 Kg horse is 30 grams.

If the horse is experiencing some inflammatory issues a higher dose may be more effective such as 60 grams or up to 120 grams daily.

Being a natural remedy for horses the dose can be variable. Ideally start with the lower dose and increase if need.

Feeding Recommendation

Ultimate Sport can be fed alone or combined with a suitable fibre source. Adjust intake according to needs based on breed, body weight, body condition, work load and available forage. Always provide at least 1.5% of the horse’s body weight in good quality forage (pasture, hay, chaff, fibre products) per day. Always allow free access to fresh clean water.

How to Feed

High Joule is not a complete feed and must be fed as part of a balanced ration.
Introduce into horse’s ration gradually over 2 weeks.

Feed in conjunction with ample forage (At least of 1.5-2% of your horse’s body weight daily) in the form of pasture, hay and/or chaff.

Make clean, fresh water and salt available at all times.

Adjust the amount fed so it is appropriate for your horse’s body fatness, growth rate, stage of development, pregnancy or lactation, along with the quality and quantity of forage available.

Divide feeds into two or more smaller meals if feeding more than 0.5 kg per 100 kg of bodyweight in ‘hard feed’ per day.

The amount of feed required will depend on the quality of the pasture/forage, exercise intensity, dentition, metabolism and condition of the horse.
